Coach Education

Sitemap

Welcome to British Triathlon’s coaching pages, dedicated to supporting coaches, tutors and assessors, providing opportunities for all those wanting to coach, tutor and assess triathlon in the UK. British Triathlon is committed to coach education and the development of coaching across the UK, with around 1500 coaches registered across all three levels. Whether you are completely new to coaching, or you have much experience within the world of coaching, we hope you will find what you are looking for here.

Coaching is at the heart of triathlon and vital to the success of all participants at every level from children, novice adults participating in their first event, age-group participation through to preparing athletes for the World Championships and Olympic Games.

The current British Triathlon Coach Education Programme places a great emphasis on a coaches’ competence rather than knowledge (what coaches can do rather than what coaches know). Through this we draw out the importance of the “how to coach” skills rather than just the “what to coach” skills of triathlon, in particular by integrating the theory into the practice. To enable a coach to progress we aim to create more opportunities to put their coaching skills into practice with the ready availability of feedback. All three levels of qualification are now UKCC endorsed and recognised by the International Triathlon Union (ITU).

About Us

British Triathlon's Coach Education team is responsible for producing and delivering a comprehensive education system eventually across all 4 levels from assistant to world class coach. We are in the process of developing a new coach education system that will be aligned to the UK Coaching Framework, in conjunction with sports coach UK, commencing with the UKCC, which will meet the needs of triathlon, be relevant to all multi-sport events and most importantly, produce competent coaches.

The principles that guide the development and direction of the British Triathlon Coach Education system include:

  • Meet the needs of the sport and be relevant to all disciplines
  • Produce qualified and active coaches
  • Quality assurance by investment in recruiting and training the tutors who deliver and assess the qualifications
  • Meet the needs of a broad range of people coming into the Programme with a broad range of backgrounds and aspirations
  • Supported by quality learning resources
  • Ability to evolve to meet the changing needs of triathlon and the UKCC
  • Aligned to the National Occupational Standards and qualification guidelines for the UKCC
