Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Triathlon


The UKCC endorsed Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Triathlon is the entry coaching award, aimed at individuals new to coaching and or the sport of triathlon.

The course is interactive and involves group discussion, presentations and most importantly, a large aspect of the course is made up of practical coaching experience throughout all three disciplines. Throughout the course, you will be introduced to the fundamental skills of coaching eg, how to build rapport, how to demonstrate, how to explain etc and apply this to the technical skill development components of triathlon.

The Level 1 coaching role has been defined as:
“Assist more qualified coaches, delivering aspects of coaching sessions, normally under direct supervision”

Duration

A 3 day course, with approximately 2-3 weeks between weekends totalling 33hrs of guided and self-directed study. This equates to approximately 22 hours contact time with your tutor, and 11 hours homestudy.

You will be expected to complete a range of assessed and learning tasks, that must be achieved in order to obtain the qualification.

Entry Requirements

  • You have to be a minimum of 16 years of age.
  • You are enthusiastic about getting people active and involved in triathlon at grassroots level.
  • You hold an appropriate level of coaching insurance that provides at least the same level of cover as that of Home Nations membership. If you are not a current member, you can join online - see join your home nation association and choose either England, Scotland or Wales.

Units

At Level 1 you will be required to complete the following:

  • 1x 15 minute Assessed Practical Coaching session on the last day of the course
  • A 1 hour Exam (Closed book) on day 3 under exam conditions
  • A selection of assessed group and home study activities.

Fees          

The cost of the Level 1 CCTRI is £300. This includes facility hire (classroom, swimming pool, running track and cycling areas), all tuition, a comprehensive coaching resource pack, administrative, assessment and Internal verification costs.

Reassessment Policy

In order to gain the qualification of L1CCTRI, all elements of assessment must be completed and signed off by the Course Assessor.  If a course candidate is referred on either the practical assessment or written examination, the Recognised Centre (British Triathlon) will contact the candidate to arrange a re-sit of the assessment in question.  Initially we will endeavour to offer attendance at another course,   If this is not possible, the Recognised Centre will arrange a reassessment through an accredited British Triathlon Coach Assessor.

In the case of a practical reassessment, where the candidate cannot take up the option of attendance on another course, it is the responsibility of the candidate to organise the athletes and venue to facilitate the session and to bear any costs incurred (this session could be combined with a triathlon club session).

Fees

Written examination  - £25.00
Payable directly to British Triathlon (covers cost of Assessor plus administration)

Practical assessment  -  £35.00
Payable directly to British Triathlon  (covers cost of Assessor plus administration)

Payment must be made before the reassessment process can be initiated.


Progression

This Qualifcation may enable you to secure paid or voluntary work as an asistant coach within a triathlon club, Local Authority leisure centre, health and fitness establishments. On successful completion of the L1CCTRI, coaches are able to progress to the L2CCTRI.

What will I need to bring?

Candidate coaches are required to supply their own bikes, on the appropriate     day(s). Bikes will not be needed on all days. There will also be practicals in swimming, cycling and running. Therefore you will need appropriate equipment to take part in the sessions, as the course programme is generally delivered out of the triathlon race season, over the winter. Please note that the practical sessions are not intended to be physically demanding as the emphasis in on the coaching elements.

Closing Dates

All course applications must be in 20 working days before the course, this is applicable to all qualification levels.
