Insurance Statement for Coaches


BTF Qualified Coaches

Insurance benefits for BTF qualified coaches, included in the individual membership fee in respect of Triathlon England, triathlonscotland and Welsh Triathlon (the Home Nation Associations) is summarised below. This Insurance also includes cover for trainee coaches as long as these trainee coaches are under the supervision of a qualified coach.

Public Liability

This recognises that any BTF qualified coach who joins a Home Nation Association could be found negligent in their duty to participants, spectators, facility providers or the public and as a result be held legally liable   for accident, injury or damage to property or individuals.

Qualified coaches are insured for Public Liability to a limit of £5 million per incident.   This includes claims arising from coaching triathlon activities whilst at home or abroad.  Qualified coaches are insured to the level they are qualified to while coaching in the sporting activities of triathlon, duathlon and related multi-sport activities which are formed from a combination of swimming, cycling and running.

Insurance cover is in force for Qualified Coaches with a limit of earnings up to a Gross Income of £5,000.  Qualified Coaches earning more than this limit will be recognised as Commercial Coaches and their own separate insurance arrangement will be required.

It is important to note that the insurance covers your legal liability and legal costs and expenses in the event of negligence only, and does not cover deliberate acts.


Professional Indemnity

This recognises that any qualified coach could be found negligent in their duty to participants, spectators or the public arising out of their professional acts, errors or omissions and as a result be held legally liable for loss (financial or otherwise). Qualified coaches are insured for Public Liability to a limit of £5 million per incident and in the aggregate in total any one period of insurance.

Principle Exclusions

•    Property in control or charge of the club ″ 

•    Ownership or use of vehicles

•    Liabilities assumed under agreements/contracts

•    The first £250 of each claim (the policy excess) which the individual member is  

      required to pay

•    Coaches who receive payment for commercial purposes; either as a self     employed individual or as   the employee, manager or director of a partnership or company.

Persons Entitled to Indemnity

  • Trained and qualified coaches who are members of any Home Nation Association.
