British Triathlon Race Pass

As part of the British Triathlon Competition Rules, individuals are required to become a member of the sport when taking part in a British Triathlon permitted event, hold a race licence and third-party public liability insurance. A Race Pass is for individuals who are not annual members of British Triathlon.

What is A Race Pass?

A Race Pass is a British Triathlon membership product. Individuals who are not annual members of British Triathlon must purchase a Race Pass to take part in a British Triathlon permitted event. A Race Pass provides membership to the sport, a race licence and third party public liability insurance for the duration of the race the individual is taking part in.

Where can you purchase a Race Pass?

A Race Pass can be purchased whilst registering and paying for a British Triathlon permitted event through an event organisers online entry system or as a separate transation to an event entry through the British Triathlon website.

Individuals should follow the instructions on their event organisers website and/or event entry confirmation email to purchase a Race Pass.

Individuals who are directed to purchase a Race Pass, as a separate transaction to an event entry though the British Triathlon website, should locate the event entered on the British Triathlon Event Search and scroll to the race entered and click 'Buy Race Pass'.

How much is a Race Pass?

A Race Pass costs £2 for participants aged 24 and under and £8 for those aged 25 years and above.

How long is the Race Pass valid for?

A Race Pass is valid for the duration of the race that an individual is taking part in. The Race Pass is only valid for the race it was purchased for.

Who can purchase a Race Pass?

Any individual taking part in a British Triathlon permitted event must purchase a Race Pass except for those participating in a Swim Bike Run Programme event or those living overseas. A Race Pass is included within the entry price of a Swim Bike Run Programme event and is not required to be purchased additionally. Further information regarding overseas residents can be found below.

What does Race Pass provide?

A Race Pass provides a race licence and public liability insurance cover up to £15 million. Public liability insurance is defensive cover that protects an individual if they cause an accident injuring or damaging someone else or someone else’s property. This only applies if the individual is legally responsible for the accident. Compensation is paid from the insurers to the person pursuing the claim, so that the individual does not have to pay the full amount. Individuals will only pay the excess of £250 if a claim for injury or damage is successful. Confirmation of the terms of the insurance cover and how to claim can be found on the British Triathlon Insurance Zone website here.

What doesn't Race Pass provide?

Race Pass does not include personal accident cover, or insurance cover for an individual’s equipment and kit. Race Pass does not provide legal support services for any incident in which an individual is involved.

What do I need to do if I have an accident?

If an individual who has purchased a Race Pass is unfortunate to be involved in an accident at the permitted event covered by their Race Pass, they will need to visit the British Triathlon Insurance Zone as soon as practicably possible to report the accident.

Overseas Residents

Overseas residents are exempt from becoming a member of the sport when taking part in a British Triathlon permitted event. Overseas residents are not required to purchase a Race Pass or hold a race licence. However, to take part in a British Triathlon permitted event, overseas residents must have their own public liability insurance (minimum indemnity of £5 million) in place for the event.

By entering a British Triathlon permitted event, overseas residents do so confirming that they will have public liability insurance in place for the duration of the event. Proof of valid public liability insurance may be requested at the event and in the case of any subsequent third-party claims.

Unfortunately, British Triathlon are only able to provide public liability insurance to UK residents. If an individual lives abroad permanently, public liability insurance cannot be provided by British Triathlon through either annual membership or through a Race Pass. Overseas residents are encouraged to contact their national federation for guidance.
