Jonathan Brownlee’s silver adds to GB medal haul
13th September 2009
Britain’s Jonathan Brownlee took Junior Men’s silver today at the 2009
ITU Junior Triathlon World Championships on Australia’s Gold Coast.
The
younger brother of newly-crowned Elite Men’s champion Alistair Brownlee
fell agonizingly short of taking the title – and a world “double” for
the Brownlee family - when outpaced over the final kilometre of the run
by Spain’s Mario Mola.
Today’s silver added to the GB’s senior
men’s gold of yesterday and the gold and silver won in the women’s U23
race on Friday. The women’s senior race is still to come.
Under
strikingly blue skies with a 15 knot easterly and 20-plus degree air
temperatures, Mola completed the course in a time of 54.35.
Brownlee crossed the line in 54.50 to hold off a fast finish from Hungary’s Kristof Kiraly who took bronze.
After
a swim and bike leg that produced no real breakaways, Brownlee took the
initiative in the run, opening up a handy five second lead over a
tightly-packed field heading into the final lap.
But in a
mirror image of yesterday’s Brownlee-Gomez clash in the senior contest,
it was the Spaniard Mola who broke away to join the frontrunner with
1500m left to run.
With the pair now out alone, Mola produced a telling surge 1000m from the finish line to which Brownlee was unable to respond.
The
hot temperature and pace of the run took its toll on Brownlee who was
distressed and in the hands of the medical staff for some time after
the race.
Mola paid tribute to the silver medallist.
“I knew when I caught Jonny one kilometre from the finish line I had him”, Mola said.
“He
is a magnificent runner and I know that I didn’t want to look back
because he would catch me again, so I just pushed all I could and I’m
very happy”, he said.
Earlier in the day, University of
Birmingham student Vicky Graves finished 26th in a field of 49
[1:04:11] in the Women’s Junior title race after taking a battering in
the water.
“I had a good start but I just got smashed in the swim, it was like a washing machine.
“There
was so much water my goggles filled up and I tried to get to the edge
[of the field], but I just couldn’t get any space”, she said.
Frenchwoman
Emmie Charayron took the honours in 1:00:22 while Australian Emma
Jackson [1:00:41] and the Netherland’s Rachel Klamer [1:00:57] filled
silver and bronze.
