Double delight as British junior men win silver and bronze

Published:

Marc Austin and Grant Sheldon won silver and bronze for Great Britain in the junior men’s race at the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final London. Gordon Benson and Morgan Davies ensured that there were four Brits in the top eight.

Following a close and tight race, a huge pack of around 40 athletes ran out of the second transition within fourteen seconds of each other. Frenchman Dorian Coninx was the dominant runner but the British athletes, who are all 19-years-old, ran exceptionally well to secure four of the top eight places.

Marc Austin said: “It’s pretty amazing to get two Brits on the podium at the World Championships. It’s great with so many friends and family in the Grandstand. It’s good to get a medal for them.”

Commenting on the strong overall results for the Great Britain team he added: “It’s been looking good for the past few years and it’s good that we’ve finally shown that on the world stage.”

Fellow Scot, Grant Sheldon, was a second behind Austin at the finish. He said: “There was the three of us, Coninx, Marc and me up front. Coninx went away at the dead turn and I was just trying to hold on. Every time you come by that big stadium there’s a massive cheer.”

Leeds based Gordon Benson had a strong performance in fifth and Welshman Morgan Davies had the race of his life in eighth. Davies, a student at Loughborough University, was a reserve and won the elite junior aquathlon gold yesterday before finding out he was on the start line today.

Davies raced with a device inserted into his chest to monitor heart arrhythmia that impacted his health earlier in the season.

The elite racing continues this afternoon with the U23 events.
