Tom Bishop finished sixth at the Mooloolaba ITU Triathlon World Cup in Australia, demonstrating good form at the start of the season.

Bishop, 22, has had a good winter of training in Leeds and recorded an excellent result in a large field of 68 athletes from 20 different countries. The race took place over the sprint distance on Australia’s Sunshine Coast (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run).

Bishop briefly held the lead on the run alongside Korea’s Ji Hwan Kim before Mario Mola (ESP) ran past to claim the win. Richard Murray (RSA) and Sven Riederer (SUI) completed the podium finishers.

Gwen Jorgensen (USA) won the women’s race ahead of teammate Katie Hursey and Japan’s Ai Ueda.

Bishop was pleased with his performance and now travels to New Zealand where he will take part in the New Plymouth ITU Triathlon World Cup next weekend, along with a large British squad including former ITU world champion, Helen Jenkins and ITU World Triathlon Series runner up, Jodie Stimpson.
