Bowden and Bishop head to the sun for season opener

Published:

Adam Bowden and Tom Bishop are the British athletes in action on Saturday (15 March) in Mooloolaba, Australia, where the 2014 ITU Triathlon World Cup season gets under way. This is a popular warm up race for athletes building up to the ITU World Triathlon Series, and has attracted a strong international field.

Mario Mola (ESP) and Richard Murray (RSA) are just two of the top ranked names in the men’s line up, whilst Anne Haug (GER), Gwen Jorgensen (USA), Andrew Hewitt (NZ) and Emma Moffatt (AUS) will make it an exciting women’s race.

Bowden and Bishop are racing their first triathlons of the year, both having had a good winter of training. Bowden had one of his best ever performances at the National Cross Country Championships last month and was upbeat about the forthcoming season when he left Loughborough for Australia last week.

The Mooloolaba ITU Triathlon World Cup takes place on the Sunshine Coast of Australia, 60miles north of Brisbane. The race is over the sprint distance - 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run.

Rough sea conditions have dictated that for the second year running the swim will take place in the Mooloolah River rather than the sea.

Both races are on Saturday 15 March with commentary available via Twitter @triathlonlive. The women’s race starts at 12pm local time followed by the men’s race at 3pm (Mooloolaba is ten hours ahead, so the women’s race will be at 2am and the men’s at 5am UK time on Saturday morning).

The ITU World Triathlon Series gets underway next month in Auckland, New Zealand, on 6 April.
