Bowden seventh in Chicago

Published:

Adam Bowden produced another World Triathlon Series top ten finish in Chicago, the fifth of his career. The Loughborough based 31 year old was well placed throughout the race, which was won by Spain’s Javier Gomez.

The choppy 1500m swim in Lake Michigan saw Bowden exit the water just behind the key contenders. Initially in the second pack on the bike, Bowden and the rest of this group took advantage of the wide flat roads to catch the leaders.

Although two riders, Tom Davidson (NZL) and Cameron Good (AUS) broke away, Bowden rode well and was at the front of the group coming into the second transition.

He was an early front-runner with Gomez, Mario Mola (ESP), Alexander Bryukankov (RUS), Joao Pereira (POR) and Fernando Alarza (ESP). As the 10km run unfolded, Gomez injected pace that saw him move away from the rest and claim his fourth Series victory of the season.

Bowden looked at one stage that he could move up from fourth to third and challenge for his first Series podium. At the finish he was seventh, his best result of the season so far.

The next round takes place over the sprint distance in Hamburg, 12-13 July. A full team of British athletes, including Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, Jodie Stimpson and Helen Jenkins is expected to compete. The event will also feature the ITU Mixed Triathlon Relay World Championships.

Results:

1. Javier Gomez, ESP, 1:47:21
2. Joao Pereira, POR, 1:47:29
3. Mario Mola, ESP, 1:47:40
7. Adam Bowden, GBR, 1:48:16
