British elite athletes celebrate at British Triathlon Awards

Published:

In an evening aimed at celebrating ‘Our Greatest Triathlon Team’, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Gordon Benson were awarded the British Triathlon Female Elite Junior Triathlete of the Year and British Triathlon Male Elite Junior Triathlete of the Year at the British Triathlon Awards Dinner on Saturday 17 November 2012.

Georgia Taylor-Brown has had a superb season that has seen her become 2012 ETU Junior Triathlon European Champion and ITU Junior Duathlon World Champion.

After collecting the award, Georgia commented: “I didn’t expect to win the Europeans at all! World Duathlon was just a race I wanted to do, I didn’t expect to win that either, which was great. “

Gordon Benson has delivered three top-five performances in ETU Triathlon Junior European Cup events in 2012, and ended the season with fifth place at the ITU Junior Triathlon World Championships last month in Auckland.

Gordon was delighted, commenting : “I got a top five finish this year, so hopefully I won’t go backwards.”

With the World Championships in London next September, he added: “It’s an exciting way to finish my junior career. I’ll hopefully go out with a bang!”

Lucy Gossage won the GE British Triathlon Female Elite Duathlete of the Year award after winning a gold medal performance at the 2012 Horst ETU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon European Championships and silver at the 2012 Zofingham ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championships.

Mark Buckingham won GE British Triathlon Male Elite Duathlete of the Year for the second successive year.

Mark added: “My highlight of the year was finally breaking onto the triathlon scene. Although I won the Duathlon award, I was really pleased this year when I got fourth in a World Cup in Banyoles in Spain. I was happy I was able to come back from that and retrace my Duathlon roots and do World Championships, and win the British Duathlon Champion again.“

Leanda Cave and Stephen Bayliss were awarded the GE British Triathlon Female Elite Long Distance Triathlete of the Year and GE British Triathlon Male Elite Long Distance Triathlete of the Year.

Leanda celebrated the award after becoming the first women to achieve the ‘double’ after winning both the 2012 Ironman 70.3 World Championships and the 2012 Ironman World Championships in Kona.

In 2012, Stephen Bayliss has won bronze at the 2012 Roth ETU Challenge Long Distance Triathlon European Championships and also notched victories at Challenge Vichy and Challenge Henley.
