At tonight’s British Triathlon Awards Dinner, two of those medal winners, Peggy Crome (70-74) and Roger Witz Barnes (25-29) were awarded the British Triathlon Female and Male Age-Group Triathlete of the Year award.

 

Peggy has been a member of the GE Great Britain Age-Group Team for many years and always shows true team spirit, offering support and guidance for newcomers with her customary smile. Peggy has won many medals over the years, with her most recent achievement, a gold medal at the 2012 ETU Sprint Distance Triathlon European Championships in Eilat in April.

 

Peggy was delighted to be recognised, and was keen to encourage others to take up the triathlon challenge. She said: “Just do it, so many people look at it with an event, as a whole, instead of thinking I can do this one step at a time, anybody can do it.”

 

Roger Witz Barnes was unable to attend tonight’s Awards Dinner, however his achievements are no-less impressive winning gold at the ITU Standard Distance Age-Group Triathlon World Championships. The 28-year-old handled rough waters, strong winds and energy sapping hills in New Zealand better than all of his fellow competitors, not only being the winner of his age-group but also delivering the fastest time of the day to finish first overall male.

 

This season the GE Great Britain Age-Group Team has won an impressive 67 gold, 55 silver and 59 bronze medals. Next year’s 2013 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final London will host the ITU Age-Group Triathlon World Championships, creating the unique opportunity for age-group athletes to compete in front of friends and family in London’s iconic Hyde Park.
