Brits ready to feel the heat in Mexico

Published:

Sophie Coldwell and twin brothers, Tom and David Bishop, are set to race in the heat and humidity of Mexico this weekend at the Cozumel ITU Triathlon World Cup.

The sprint race should be fast and furious with the likes of Olympic champion, Nicola Spirig (SUI) and Olympic bronze medalist, Erin Densham (AUS) taking part. The men’s race features ITU World Triathlon Series podium finisher, Joao Pereira (POR).

The women will be first to race at 9am on Sunday morning (local time). A 750m ocean swim will be followed by a flat but slightly technical 20km bike leg and 5km run. USA’s Katie Hursey has the honour of starting as the number one ranked athlete and has a good pedigree over the sprint distance.

Spirig ran 2hours 37:12 in the marathon at this summer’s European Athletics Championships and won the ETU Triathlon European title in Kitzbuhel.

Sophie Coldwell will relish the high level senior competition having finished fourth at the ITU World Championships in her final year as a junior competitor. Emma Pallant is also racing.

The men start two hours after the women at 11am. Tom Bishop will hope for another late season solid result having missed the main part of the season through injury. His brother, David, is the other British athlete taking part.

Live timing will be available via triathlon.org/live and twitter at @triathlonlive for updates. Cozumel is six hours behind the UK so race start times will 3pm (women) and 5pm (men) on Sunday afternoon.
