Brownlee Brothers battle in desert heat

Published:

The 2014 triathlon season gets underway for the Brownlee Brothers this weekend. The Olympic gold and bronze medallists are in action at the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon on Saturday morning (15 March).

Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee will race the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon on Saturday. The race features a 100km bike leg rather than the standard 40km and will start in the early hours of Saturday to avoid the intense heat.

A year ago Alistair won in Abu Dhabi with a winning margin of five minutes. With younger brother, Jonathan, on the start line as well as established names from long-distance triathlon, the 2014 edition of the race should be a lot closer.

Britain's Mark Buckingham, Rhys Davey and Georgie Rutherford are also taking part from a British perspective in the short-course race (1500m swim, 100km bike, 10km run). Jodie Swallow goes in the longer format event (3000m swim, 200km bike, 20km).

Jonathan Brownlee will fly to New Zealand following this event. He is set to race the opening round of the 2014 ITU World Triathlon Series in Auckland on 6 April. Alistair will sit out the first round, preferring to focus on training.
