Stimpson Gold, Jenkins Silver in Cape Town

British women dominated the ITU World Triathlon Cape Town with a one-two finish. Vicky Holland also achieved a top ten finish to seal a successful day for British triathletes.

Cold conditions meant it was a shortened swim in Cape Town but Britain's women made a decisive start with Lucy Hall pushing the swim. Jodie Stimpson, Helen Jenkins and Vicky Holland all swam with her and formed a formidable partnership on the bike leg, which proved decisive.

Lucy Hall was technically and tactically excellent, helping the lead group of twelve athletes stay away from the rest of the field on the bike and establish a two minute lead into the final transition.

Stimpson was the most assertive at the start of the run and established an early lead. Helen Jenkins soon joined her and the British pair ran together, surging and pushing the pace all the way to the finish. Stimpson was the strongest inside the final 1000m and ran to her second straight Series win.

She said: “Lucy Hall was absolutely amazing on that bike today, so was Helen, so was Vicky. The GB girls were definitely strong out there today.

“When Helen passed me it was all about trying to hang on. I tried to break her going on to the last lap and I couldn’t, so I sat back behind and then I gave it all I’d got and I managed to come out on top today.”

Stimpson now cements her position at the top of the world rankings and Helen Jenkins moves into second place behind her.

Jenkins said: “I was disappointed it was only one lap in the swim. The cold water doesn’t really bother me, I’m from Wales, the water is cold. But we had a really good group on the bike, the girls really committed. It just shows what you can do when everyone commits.”

Commenting on the run, she added: “I felt strong. I got back up to Jodie. I knew she was going to play a tactical game but I knew I had to keep the pressure on because Gwen was coming up from behind. I kept pushing and I didn’t have anything at the end but I’m happy to be on the podium, it’s brilliant.”

Vicky Holland was rewarded for her hard work on the bike with a top ten finish. She finished eighth and teammate Katie Hewison ran up to 13th place at the finish line.

The men’s race takes place tomorrow, with another close battle between Jonathan Brownlee and Javier Gomez being greatly anticipated. The race starts at 3pm (UK time) and will be televised live on the BBC Red Button.
