ETU Aquathlon European Championships kicks off a big weekend in Châteauroux

The swim-run discipline of Aquathlon has its European Championships in Châteauroux, France this weekend as the event sees a change of venue from its previous base in Cologne, Germany. Defending Elite Champion Hannah Kitchen returns to regain her 2015 title.

The town of Châteauroux in central France will welcome a host of multisport athletes to the Indre department this weekend, as it plays host to two ETU European Championship events. Racing starts on Saturday with the ETU Aquathlon European Championships, which will see Great Britain Elite and Age-Group athletes competing over the swim-run format of 1km / 5km.

Among the British Elite athletes racing is defending champion Hannah Kitchen, who also won the Silver medal two years ago, both of those events taking place in Cologne. A specialist in the discipline, Hannah also won the Bronze medal in the Elite event at the 2014 World Championships in Edmonton.

Having raced last weekend in the French Grand Prix event in Valence, Hannah is looking forward to another outing on French soil this coming Saturday:

“I'm really excited to try and defend my European Aquathlon title this weekend. I raced here in the ETU European Cup last year so I know the venue well and my French team are looking after me and will be out supporting on Saturday! It's a quality field, which should make an exciting race so I can't wait to get stuck in. I enjoyed racing in Cologne for the past two years but Chateauroux is the perfect venue  - hopefully the water will be nice and warm and the run flat and fast.”

Also competing just after the elite athletes are 115 Great Britain Age-Groupers, taking on the same 1km swim and 5km run. Whilst many are flying the GB flag for the first time, the team boasts a lot of experience, with many athletes having won European medals previously.
