Hall and Nicholls finish in Mexican top ten

Published:

Nicola Spirig (SUI) and Javier Gomez (ESP) were impressive winners at the Cozumel ITU World Cup in Mexico. The Olympic medallists dominated the fields as Britain’s athletes achieved two top ten finishes.

Lucy Hall achieved her second World Cup top ten finish of the week with 9th. Another great swim and strong bike ride in hot and humid conditions put her in a strong position to achieve a good finish over the sprint distance race.

Nicola Spirig (SUI), the Olympic Champion, made the most of her return to World Cup racing since having a baby and ran away from Sarah Groff (USA) to claim the win by five seconds. Hall finished just over a minute back and Natalie Milne also finished 15th.

In the men’s race Javier Gomez was the firm favourite having won the world title last month. He lived up to expectations, claiming the win from Aurélien Lescure of France and leaving Dmitry Polyanskiy (RUS) and Jarrod Shoemaker (USA) to fight out a sprint finish for third. Polyanskiy got the nod and the medal following close viewing of the finish line photo.

Ritchie Nicolls recovered time lost during the swim to run up to eighth place, an impressive result for an athlete now more closely associated with middle distance racing. Mark Buckingham was 14th to round off his international season and Graham Leitch was 39th.
