Triathlon heads to Germany for next instalment of European action

Published:

The curtain may be drawn on Geneva but there’s no rest for our age-groupers, as they prepare for this weekend’s ETU TNatura Cross Triathlon European Championships.

Schluchsee, will host the event on Sunday (19 July), seeing 33 members of the Great Britain Age-Group Team start their championship campaigns in Germany’s Black Forest Highlands.

There are also two elite athletes, Louise Fox and James Anderson aiming to make the podium across the weekend.

Together they will take on the best of Europe’s cross-triathletes over a 1.5km swim (2 laps of 750m) through the highest reservoir in Germany before battling a 30km bike leg; two laps through the heart of the forest. Once through transition, a 10km run spread over 4 laps will bring competition to a close and decide who is awarded a European title.

The Black Forest Highlands are found at altitudes of between 700 and 1,500 metres and should prove a picturesque setting for some interesting head to heads this weekend.

Great Britain’s age-groupers returned with two medals from last year’s championships in Sardinia and will look to build on this this time round. Amanda Dawson (W45-49) returns to the start line this year, looking to improve on her bronze from 2014.

Marc Preece, Great Britain Age-Group Team Manager, said: “We have over 30 age-groupers racing this weekend and a couple of elite athletes too - namely, Louise Fox who's been focussing her season on the Xterra European Tour and currently lying 3rd in the Tour series.

“Cross triathlon is still relatively new, yet the fields are increasing in size year-on-year. At the ETU and ITU Cross Championships in 2014, Great Britain took a plethora of medals home and we hope this year to increase this tally. The weather is expected to be exceptionally warm and with a strong field, there will be some tough competition.”

Louise Fox, lining up in the elite women’s race on Sunday, commented: “My focus for the season is ITU World Championships in Sardinia. This weekend I’m aiming for top 10 - that would be a good result for me. The short, fast courses suit me better, so we shall see".
