Double joy for European Youth Relay teams

Great Britain’s European Youth Relay Teams won gold and silver in Penza, Russia. The women’s team took gold and the men’s silver.

The team of Sophie Alden, Olivia Mathias and Kate Waugh were fairly comfortable winners over the hosts, Russia. Finishing the first leg in close contention with all of the other teams, the British team pulled ahead during the second leg and maintained that lead throughout the final leg to claim the gold medals.

In the men’s race Ben Dijkstra, Jordan Hull and Hayden Burton finished second to Russia. Spain again won the bronze medal. The British team led early on but were overtaken by a strong final leg from the Russians.

The medal winning success by the Youth teams followed a gold medal winning performance by Gordon Benson yesterday. The 20 year-old Leeds based university student won the European U23 title in a sprint finish.
