Published:

Current Long Distance Duathlon European Champion, Lucy Gossage travels to Horst this weekend alongside a strong elite and age-group Great Britain Team to compete at the 2013 Horst ETU Powerman Long Distance and Sprint Duathlon European Championships on Sunday 21 April 2013.

Lucy won gold in the 2012 event to become European Champion in her debut race for Great Britain. That performance inspired her to win silver at the ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championships later that year and be named GE British Triathlon Elite Female Duathlete of the Year at British Triathlon’s Annual Awards Dinner.

Lucy, a member of British Triathlon’s Elite Multisport Squad is well prepared for the event commenting: "I'm really excited about starting my season and am looking forward to going back to Horst to defend my title.

“I've had a very solid winter with some good training under my belt. so I guess it's time to see where that's got me. I thoroughly enjoyed the race last year and definitely plan on putting it all out there on Sunday!"

Lucy is the only senior elite female athlete competing, but fellow Elite Multisport Squad members, Matt Moorhouse and Oliver Mott, will join her in the senior races.

Another member of the squad, George Schwiening who won silver last year will be competing in the women’s junior race aiming to once again step onto the podium in Horst. Kate Curran, a member of the Triathlon England Talent Squad who won the British Elite Junior Duathlon Championships at Prestwold two weeks ago will compete as will Leah Peploe who finished second in the same event.

In the junior men’s event, the three podium athletes from the British Elite Junior Duathlon Championships Liam Lloyd, Jimmy Kershaw and Triathlon England Talent Squad member, Calum Johnson will all compete in Horst.

Alongside the elite athletes, a large and talented Great Britain Age-Group Team including over 130 athletes in the sprint distance race and 24 athletes in the long distance duathlon race will be competing for European titles.

In the sprint distance race, there are two returning Champions, Dave Littlemore (60-64) and Brian Forster (40-44).

Dave Littlemore is looking forward to competing in Horst, commenting: “My fitness level is not ideal this close to a major race, but I am training hard, the improvement is happening and I am still hopeful of a medal in Horst. It was a great experience in Horst last year, the hosts were fantastic and I am looking forward to repeating the experience.”

In the long distance duathlon event, Christopher Dettmar is our sole returning medallist having won silver in the 40-44 age-group last year.

Joan Lennon, Great Britain Age-Group Team Manager for the event, added: "I'm thrilled to be taking such a large team of duathletes to Horst and I am particularly proud to welcome so many new people to the Great Britain Team. The excitement has been building among both the sprint and long distance duathlon teams for weeks and the mutual support shown in communications between team members has been inspiring. The forecast for Sunday is currently good and I expect great things of these teams next weekend. I hope that we will come back with plenty of medals and also memories to last a lifetime."

The long distance duathlon event involves a 15km run, 60km bike and 7.5km run, whilst sprint distance age-group athletes and elite juniors will compete over 5km run, 20km bike and 2.5km run.
