Faye McClelland and Iain Dawson celebrate paratriathlon success

In an evening aimed at celebrating ‘Our Greatest Triathlon Team’, Faye McClelland and Iain Dawson were named Tata Steel British Triathlon Female and Male Paratriathletes of the Year at the British Triathlon Awards Dinner on Saturday 17 November 2012.

Faye McClelland celebrated the award after a season where she has successfully defended both her European and World titles, beating a growing array of talented paratriathletes. In addition to her international success, Faye has also delivered domestic titles winning the 2012 Tata Steel British Paratriathlon Championships in the Tri 4 category.

Faye was delighted to win the award, and commented that the Paralympic Games had inspired her. She said: “It just shows that you can achieve anything. You can see that some of these Paralympians, that hadn’t come from a sporting background like me, could achieve such an amazing goal.”

Like Faye, Iain Dawson has won the award on the back of gold medal-winning performances at both European and World Championships. In Auckland, Iain and his guide mastered a great race to win the Tri 6 world title for the second time in three years despite facing a challenging line-up of multi-Paralympic gold medallists.

Iain said: “A lot of my success comes from having the right sport team around me. That involves my guides that I race with, who are absolute fantastic training partners and my wife, Jill, who does an awful lot of organising and supporting, and obviously all the people that sponsor me and help out.”

Both Faye and Iain’s achievements highlight the strength of the GE Great Britain Paratriathlon Team, which successfully won five world titles at the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships in Auckland. The next four years begin an exciting journey for the sport as it prepares to make its Paralympic debut at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
