British Triathlon welcomes UK Sport funding increase on Road to Rio

Published:

British Triathlon has been awarded increased UK Sport investment following its most rigorous Annual Investment Review process ever.

The review has confirmed the goal of becoming the first nation in recent history to be more successful in both Olympic and Paralympic Games post hosting the Games.

Triathlon’s additional Olympic programme funding, which represents a 35% increase on the original Rio investment cycle, is based on providing additional support for its top athletes. Specifically, this money will be invested in coaching support around Britain’s best performing triathletes in order to protect and enhance medal potential for Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

British Triathlon Performance Director, Brendan Purcell commented: “This is very welcome news indeed, and allows us to provide a significant level of additional support to our top level athletes and their ambitions to achieve major medal successes.”

He added: “It’s good news for our Paratriathlon squad too as our interim funding level that had been agreed last year has been extended over the next three years. Our Paratriathlon team is currently the best in the world, and with the sport’s Paralympic debut set for Rio we are in a position to further professionalise this squad and aim to stay ahead.”

British Triathlon’s performance programme will receive a total of £9,786,576 investment over the Rio cycle to include athlete awards. Broken down that is £7,457,977 for the Olympic programme and £2,328,599 for the Paralympic programme.
