Great Britain ends ITU World Championships with relay gold

Published:

The Great Britain Triathlon Team finished the ITU World Championships in style with a gold medal in the Under 23/Junior Mixed Relay. The team of Sophie Coldwell, Chris Perham, Lucy Hall and Gordon Benson were clear winners ahead of Australia and Canada.

Juniors Sophie Coldwell and Chris Perham got the team off to a strong start before Lucy Hall launched herself into the lake in Hawrelak Park, overhauled the two early leaders and built a big lead.

Hall’s strength on the bike kept her out in front. When she handed over to Gordon Benson after the run, Great Britain had a 2-second lead.

Benson, who finished third in the individual Under 23 event on Friday, maintained the lead, and was able to walk across the finishing line.

The U23/Junior Mixed Relay is a new event that has been added to the Championships for the first time this year. Lucy Hall was also part of the senior Great Britain Mixed Relay team that won the world title in Hamburg in July. It is hoped that Mixed Relays will be added to the Olympic programme in Tokyo in 2020.

British Triathlon Performance Director, Brendan Purcell, said: “Winning the relay today was a fantastic way to end the World Championships. The whole team was excellent. The two juniors set things up and Lucy opened up the decisive lead for Gordon to bring us home.”

He added: “The format allows us to put four under 23 athletes in, so to win it with two juniors demonstrates the desire and spirit this team has.”
