Great Britain Team Crowned Mixed Relay European Champions

Published:

Today (Sunday 29 May) the Great Britain Team of India Lee, Lucy Hall, Tom Bishop and Grant Sheldon celebrated a gold medal-winning performance in the mixed relay event at the 2016 Lisbon ETU Triathlon European Championships.

The junior mixed relay team of Sam Dickinson, Sian Rainsley, Kate Waugh and Alex Yee added a second relay gold in the final race of the day in Portugal.

In the senior race, Great Britain improved upon their bronze medal won in 2015 with a superb gold in Lisbon. Lucy Hall and Tom Bishop raced in Geneva last year and both got the Great Britain Team off to a solid start completing the first two legs of the race. Newly crowned European Champion India Lee continued an unforgettable major championships with a strong run performance before Grant Sheldon led the team home to European glory.

The Russian team finished in the silver medal position with Hungary in bronze.

India Lee showed she was full of confidence on the back of her European title, commenting: “It's amazing to be European Champion, I still can't quite believe it. I made some big improvements in training over the winter after making a few changes to my training set up. It's great to see that it’s worked and it's now being translated into more competitive results. Winning my first title is so special and to win the relay title with the rest of the team today makes the years of consistent hard work all the more rewarding.”

Great Britain’s other medallist from yesterday’s races, Sam Dickinson was delighted with the gold medal, commenting: “I have two medals, but this one is the right colour today. I am very pleased with the performance of the whole team this weekend.”

Brendan Purcell, British Triathlon’s Performance Director added: “What a fantastic end to the European Championships; the relays are great to watch, especially when you come away with a pair of gold medals. The team’s performance here in Lisbon is really strong and highlights the level that both the athletes and support staff are performing at right now. The athletes competing in the relays today also shows Great Britain's strength in-depth underneath our Olympic athletes as we build towards 2016 and then onto 2020."

Today rounded off a successful ETU European Championships in Lisbon as the focus now turns to the 2016 Strathclyde ITU World Paratriathlon Event next weekend for Great Britain’s paratriathletes and the Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds on 11 & 12 June.
