Locations revealed for future ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Finals

Published:

In an exciting announcement, the ITU have recently revealed the locations of the 2016 and 2017 ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Finals.

Mexico has been awarded the right to host the annual event in 2016 for the third time – having staged the championships in 1995 and 2002. The 29th edition of the Series Grand Final is in the hands of Rotterdam, Netherlands who will debut as hosts the following year.

In addition to watching the elite go head-to-head, the locations are bound fuel the hunger of the GB Age-Groupers, who will be aiming to qualify for Mexico’s ITU Age-Group World Championships early 2016. Being only a stone’s throw away from the UK, qualification for Rotterdam will be the following year’s priority and will likely attract great competition for places on the team.

"As unique and popular tourist destinations with ideal settings for triathlon, Mexico and The Netherlands will offer world class competition, as well as non-stop action for athletes, families and fans over a thrilling week of racing that is free to watch," said ITU President and IOC Member, Marisol Casado.

"We look forward to expanding global attention on triathlon in our goal to grow the sport at these coveted events."

No stranger to elite racing, Mexico also staged the Team Triathlon World Championships in 2006 and has also seen numerous World Cup races contested on its soil.  The exact city for the Grand Final will be confirmed early in 2015.

As 2017 hosts, the Netherlands are also familiar with top-level triathlon, having held a 2010 World Cup in Holten which featured five GB representatives.  The Cross Triathlon World Championships in The Hague also saw an elite silver medal picked up along with an Age-Group team scooping two gold, one silver and three bronze medals for team GB in July 2013.

Rotterdam has proposed a circuit in the heart of the city on the famous peninsula Kop van Zuid in front of the popular New York Hotel, making it a pristine spot to capture top-notch elite tri and paratri and age-group triathlon action.

Vice Mayor of Rotterdam and Alderman for Sports, Adriaan Visser, said: ”The opportunity to host the World Triathlon Series Grand Final offers a new prestigious event on our sports calendar and is a great boost for Dutch triathlon and for our National Federation.

“Rotterdam will welcome the ITU family with great enthusiasm."

The 2015 World Triathlon Grand Final will be held in Chicago 15-20 September. Official dates for the 2016 and 2017 World Championships will be confirmed and announced as soon as possible.
