A new name to the 2015 UK Sport Lottery Funded World Class Performance Potential Squad, Jessica Learmonth made her mark on the triathlon scene last year by achieving her first international podium finish at the Madrid ETU European Cup. A former national swimmer and Leeds United fanatic, we spoke to the 26-year-old on what exactly makes her tick...
How did you get into triathlon?
I did a mini triathlon for charity at work, enjoyed the challenge so I decided to continue by entering some local races in Yorkshire. My dad used to do triathlons and I would often go watch him so I have always been aware of the sport.
Previous sporting background?
I Swam for City Of Leeds Swimming Club as a distance Freestyler and medalled at Nationals when I was younger. I also played golf at Wetherby Golf Club and football for Leeds United Ladies Academy and Ossett Albion – I’m into my fair share of sports as you can tell!
Do you have a sporting family?
As I've mentioned my dad used to compete in triathlons when he was younger and now swims and enters the occasional road race. My partner is a Cat 2 road cyclist and my brother-in-law is a runner – he actually competed in the Commonwealth Games last summer.
I'm a huge Leeds United supporter myself - not the best hobby to have at present!
Sum up triathlon in three words:
Fun, painful and unpredictable
What do you do to chill out in your spare time?
I like to cook and bake (and then eat it – obviously!). I also like to go to Leeds games and spend time with my partner.
Who is your sporting hero?
Wayne Randall (cyclist) because he is hard-working, talented, modest and a genuinely nice guy.
Greatest sporting moment in history is?
The Tour de France coming to Yorkshire was pretty memorable.
