Joyce third at Hawaii Ironman World Championships

Published:

Rachel Joyce finished third at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii in a time of 9hours 04:23. Jodie Swallow was fourth. Australia’s Mirinda Carfrae and Germany’s Sabastian Kienle won the world titles.

Finishing on the podium for third time in her career, Joyce started the run in second place behind Daniela Ryf (SUI). Joyce was catching Ryf initially, but the London 2012 Olympian and Ironman 70.3 world champion recovered her pace to stay ahead.

Carfrea started the run nearly fifteen minutes down on Ryf, but unleashed a course record marathon run time of 2:50:26 to pass everyone and claim her third Ironman World title.

Jodie Swallow achieved her best ever Hawaii finish in and excellent fourth place (9:10:19).

Kienle set up his first Hawaii win with a stunning bike leg in particularly windy conditions. He finished five minutes ahead of Ben Hoffman (USA) and 2008 Olympic Champion, Jan Frodeno (GER).

Britain’s top man was James Gilfillan in 31st position and a time of 8:59:47, which was good enough for second place in the 35-39 Age Group. Harry Wiltshire was one place behind in 9:00:00 racing in the professional ranks (29th Pro).

In addition to Gilfillan’s Age-Group silver, Simone Dailey and Caroline Livesey won Age-Group medals. Sam Baxter was fourth in the M30-34 Age-Group and Tracy Cook was fourth in the W40-44 Age-Group.
