Britain’s junior triathletes performed well against their European counterparts at the Alanya ETU Junior European Cup event this weekend. Sian Rainsley and Luke Penney won medals. A handful of British senior athletes also competed in the ITU World Cup event on the same course.
Rainsley, 17, won silver behind the remarkably fast running Dane, Alberte Pedersen. In the junior men’s race Luke Penny won bronze in a very tight finish and Jimmy Kershaw was 10th.
Penny, 19, finished just seconds behind two Swiss athletes. Just over half a minute behind, Kershaw finished 10th with Jack Willis just behind him in 11th and Anthony Haynes 13th.
The men’s ITU World Cup event went to form with 2004 Olympic medal winner Sven Reiderer winning another gold for Switzerland ahead of Alessandro Fabian. Tom Bishop was the best of the British athletes in 12th place.
Racing on the course on which she won the ETU European title last summer, Dutch woman Rachel Klammer was ranked number one in the women’s race. However, it was team mate Maaike Caelers who took the gold. Heather Sellars finished 11th and Lois Rosindale 14th.
