World-Class triathlete and British Junior Triathlon Champion, Sophie Coldwell, joined a host of triathlete beginners in Liverpool yesterday as part of the national GO TRI 1000 initiative. GO TRI 1000 took place across the country yesterday with an estimated 1000 people taking part in specially organised short distance triathlon events.

Sophie Coldwell supported Liverpool’s GO TRI event at Lifestyles Wavertree yesterday. The event acted as the first in a series of triathlon training for beginners ahead of Tri Liverpool on Sunday, July 26, backed and supported by British Triathlon and Triathlon England, working in partnership with Liverpool City Council. Over 30 triathlon novices participated in yesterday’s GO TRI event, completing a 500 metre swim followed by a 5km run around the outdoor running track.

Speaking about the GO TRI event, Sophie Coldwell, a member of the British Triathlon UK Sport lottery funded World-Class Performance Programme said:

“It’s lovely to be back in Liverpool after I finished second in Tri Liverpool 2014, behind eventual World Triathlon Series winner, Gwen Jorgensen. I love the idea of the GO TRI events. They allow people to have a go at elements of triathlon in shorter distances, to really get a taster. It’s a fantastic way to approach the sport for the first time without feeling overwhelmed. The GO TRI event was so friendly and supportive and we are expecting to have many new people catch the triathlon bug! I look forward to joining everyone at the Albert Dock in summer and hopefully go one better and take the title at this year’s Tri Liverpool.”

Assistant Mayor of Liverpool and cabinet member for culture, tourism and events, councillor Wendy Simon, said:

“We are really pleased to welcome Sophie to Liverpool once again. To have someone of her standard and calibre motivating beginners at GO TRI has had such a positive effect. We want to encourage people to live healthier lives and participate in sport. The GO TRI training sessions at Lifestyles are free to Lifestyles members, are a fun and friendly way to get involved in multi-sport event and they also act as triathlon training for those looking to participate in Tri Liverpool in July.”

GO TRI training sessions are perfect for those people who are keen to enter Tri Liverpool for the first time in summer. Alongside elite triathletes and age-group competitors looking to secure British titles, Tri Liverpool has been opened up to include beginner distances where entrants will be required to swim 400m in Liverpool’s Albert Dock, cycle 10km past the iconic Liver Buildings, and run the final 2.5km leg to the finish in front of the Echo Arena. Tri Liverpool also includes a corporate relay section where entrants can enlist colleagues and choose to complete the swim, cycle or run element of the course.

Further triathlon training for triathlon novices will be scheduled throughout the spring and summer, including GO TRI training sessions at Lifestyle Leisure Centres in Garston, Alsop, Ellergreen and the Wavertree Aquatics Centre. Organisers are also creating a number of open water swimming taster sessions, for those entering the beginner and corporate relay events. Liverpool residents are being encouraged to use City Bikes for cycle training, with special training route maps being devised ahead of Tri Liverpool.

Assistant Mayor of Liverpool and cabinet member for culture, tourism and events, councillor Wendy Simon, added:

“The City of Liverpool has an ingrained love of sport. Working with British Triathlon and Triathlon England, we hope to inspire more Liverpool residents to try triathlon training themselves and participate in the much anticipated main 2015 Tri Liverpool event, on July 26.”
