Liverpool welcomes triathletes to the city ahead of Tri Liverpool

Published:

Saturday, July 25 2015: 1,500 entrants will arrive in Liverpool today for pre-race registration ahead of Tri Liverpool, the city’s annual triathlon event taking place in the city tomorrow.

A expo is taking place at The Echo Arena from midday to 8pm today to allow entrants to register themselves for the race, check in their bikes and equipment into the indoor transition area and familiarise themselves with the course. A range of sponsors and triathlon specialists are on hand to give important pre-race day advice and Liverpool triathlon club Mersey Tri will unveil their new kit at the expo, on the year of the club’s 30th birthday.

Over 5,000 spectators are expected to line the course tomorrow to cheer on age group competitors from 7am in the standard distance (1.5km swim, 40k bike and 10k run). Britain’s best will compete in the British Standard Distance Triathlon Championships and many will be aiming to qualify for the Great Britain Age-Group Team that will compete in Mexico in 2016 at the ITU Triathlon World Championships.

An open Sprint distance (750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run) sets off from 10:30am and will be followed by Beginner distance (400m swim, 10k bike and 2.5k run) starting at 11am from the Queens Dock swim start line. A relay section will see teams of three individually complete the Sprint distance swim, cycle and run.

Youth and senior elite athletes will race for valuable points in the British Triathlon Super Series with elite females setting off at 1pm with Elite males off the start line at 2:30pm. Looking to score maximum points will be last year’s Tri Liverpool runner up Sophie Coldwell and 2013 winner Emma Pallant. London 2012 Olympian and 2013 Tri Liverpool champion, Brendan Sexton will also race aiming to retain his title in 2015.

Famous faces along the course include BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin, Hollyoaks stars Nicole Barber Lane (Myra McQueen) and Karl Collins (Louis Loveday) will race alongside former Big Brother winner Craig Phillips.

Both entrants and spectators are advised to leave adequate travel time to the course as road closures are in place from 03:30am on Sunday July 26. The Strand will be closed in a northbound direction with limited vehicle access to Albert Dock, The Goree and Upper Parliament Street.

Speaking about the event, Jon Ridgeon, British Triathlon director for major and national events, said:

“British Triathlon and Liverpool City Council have been working closely to raise the profile of triathlon in Liverpool. There is no better show in the North West than Tri Liverpool for both the entrants and spectators. The dedication of the competitors is admirable and the culmination of months of training will take place tomorrow, all in front of the historic and iconic backdrop of Liverpool’s world famous waterfront. I encourage as many people as possible to come down and witness some fantastic sporting achievements and hopefully be inspired to take up their own triathlon challenge at Tri Liverpool 2016.”

Tri Liverpool is organized by British Triathlon in partnership with Liverpool City Council.
