Llanelli event to determine junior and Paratriathlon selections

Published:

Tomorrow (Saturday 16 May) sees the usually peaceful Millennium Coastal Path in Llanelli, South Wales host fast-paced elite junior and Paratriathlon events that will decide selections for forthcoming European and global competitions.

As part of the Llanelli Multisport Festival, Britain’s best elite junior triathletes will race over a sprint distance course to decide who will be put forward for ETU European Cup and Championship selections.

A 750m sea swim will be followed by fast and flat bike and run sections. The races feature many of Britain’s top junior (under 20) athletes, including Ben Dijkstra, 16, the recent winner of the London Mini Marathon, and Sian Rainsley, 18, a medal winner from the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games.

Paratriathlon takes place in the afternoon with the first start at 4pm. Athletes in all five classifications are competing for British titles and for places in the Great Britain Paratriathlon Team for the ETU European Championships and ITU World Championships.

Defending ITU world champions, Alison Patrick and Lauren Steadman are both competing. Patrick, from Scotland, competes with a guide athlete in the visually impaired event (PT5) whilst Steadman goes in the PT4 class.

Steadman will miss her friendly rivalry with former ITU world champion, Faye McClelland, who misses this event through injury. However, Clare Cunningham, who won bronze at the ITU World Championships, is taking part.

Joe Townsend and Phill Hogg are expected to have a good race against each other. Both are world class performers in the PT1 class for wheelchair users. Other international medal winners competing tomorrow include Melissa Reid (PT5) and George Peasgood (PT4).
