London Triathlon to bring Super Series to a crescendo

Published:

The British Triathlon Super Series comes to a thrilling finale this weekend (8-9 August), when the 2015 Series Champions are to be crowned in the British capital following the prestigious AJ Bell London Triathlon.

With £1500 up for grabs for the senior series winner, competition will be fierce as athletes take on the Olympic distance course winding through the city centre. Morgan Davies will be keen to continue his impressive run of form after picking up the British Elite Triathlon title at Tri Liverpool last month. This result combined with his third place at Blenheim earlier in the year sees the Welsh athlete leading the way in the super series rankings. However, with athletes’ best two performances across the series deciding the eventual winner, he will have his work cut out this weekend in a top-class field of athletes.

Hot on his heels will be Brendan Sexton. The Australian athlete was pushed into second place in Liverpool, but a win in London this weekend could see him take the 2015 series title. With the likes of Mark Buckingham and David Bishop also in the mix, there’s still everything to play for.

The women’s race will be equally as nail-biting, with Sophie Coldwell currently topping the leader board following her victory in Liverpool. As the 20 year old is absent this weekend, it could well be the turn of India Lee to take the title. Having just returned from the Rio Test Event, Lee brings with her a win in Blenheim which stands her in good stead going into London. Rio teammate Helen Jenkins also lines up in the city on Sunday. The two-time ITU World Champion will look to stamp her authority over a strong field which also includes Charlotte McShane of Australia. Last year’s super series champion Emma Pallant will also be in the mix, having picked up silver behind Coldwell at Tri Liverpool.

The AJ Bell London Triathlon also acts as the fourth round of the Youth and Junior Super Series, where athletes’ best three performances over the five races decide the overall champion.

A large junior men’s field includes Macauley Carline. He will be looking to tally some useful points in London, having only completed one race in the series so far. However, after finishing 5th in Blenheim, Carline has the potential to pull himself up the rankings in the absence of a few notable rivals.

In the junior women’s race, Mary Hodgson will look to add to her medal tally, currently sitting in sixth place overall after two podium performances. Madeline Henderson, currently second in the series having picked up her best finish in Blenheim with bronze, is likely to be up there with Hodgson.

Youth males to watch certainly include Travis Bramley. A phenomenal series has already seen him pick up two gold medals in the London Aquathlon and Tri Liverpool. By picking up a third win this weekend, Bramley would guarantee himself the series title. After finishing second to Bramley in Liverpool, Cameron Main will also want to place highly this weekend.

Youth female Imogen Moroney will look to make her way up the leaderboard. With two wins also already in the bag, London could see her overtake an absent Caitlin Roper and take the top spot in the rankings.

The Youth Super Sprint races will take place Saturday 8 August, with the junior and senior races taking place the following day.
