Jonathan Brownlee won the ITU World Triathlon Madrid for the second year in a row, and made it the fifth year running that a Brownlee brother has won on the challenging Madrid course.

Brownlee swam well to exit the water with a small but strong group of cyclists. Riding around the hilly Casa de Campo park, Brownlee worked well with Olympic silver medallist, Javier Gomez (ESP). A group containing Brownlee, Gomez, Ivan Vasiliev, Alessandro Fabian and Aaron Royle managed to form a lead of nearly two minutes by the end of the 40km bike section.

Brownlee was aggressive at the start of the run, opening a lead over Gomez and running gracefully all the way to the finish line.

"It's a good triathlon course this one, as I keep saying it's a pure triathlon course," Brownlee said. "Our group was incredible there, all the other riders did turns throughout the race and it was a fair race I think, so I enjoyed it but it was tough, it's always tough."

Brownlee was in blistering form, backing up his win in Yokoama and is now placed sixth in the world rankings having won two of the four rounds that have taken place so far in the Series. Javier Gomez is currently leading the Series and Britain's David McNamee is eigth having finished fiftheenth today.

British Triathlon Performance Director, Brendan Purcell, said: “It’s been a great weekend having won both the men’s and women’s races, so it’s definitely looking good. We have some good groups of athletes working together and now we can build on that to help the next group come through.”

He added: “It’s really positive that we have a group of women coming through now and we can continue to work with the talented men to ensure that they have the right environment in which to be successful.”

The Series moves on to Kitzbuhel on 6 July and Purcell commented: “There’s a general feeling of anticipation about Kitzbuhel. Because of the challenging course there is a different context to the race and genuine excitement. But first we have the European Championships coming up in two weeks.”

The ITU World Triathlon Series culminates at the free-to-view PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final London, 11-15 September.
