Marc Austin third in Vierzon

Published:

Marc Austin recorded his second individual podium finish of the season last weekend finishing third at the 2013 Vierzon ETU Triathlon Junior European Cup on Sunday 12 May.

Marc Austin was the highest placed British junior out of 13 athletes who were in action in France, adding another bronze medal to his third place at the Youth Olympic Games Festival earlier this season.

The field remained tightly contested after T1 before two packs formed on the opening bike laps: a lead pack of 15 and a second of 37 athletes. However, it wasn’t until the run that the race exploded into life. Marc Austin, Raphael Montoya (FRA) and Dorian Coninx (FRA) immediately drove the pace establishing a lead of over 20 seconds ahead of a chase group, which included British athlete, Gordon Benson.

Sadly, Marc couldn’t keep up with the two French athletes with Montoya outsprinting his teammate in the final straight to win in 55.52. Marc Austin finished third in 56.19

Gordon Benson just missed out on the podium finishing fourth in 56.34. Grant Sheldon delivered a top-ten finish with a time of 57.24.

In the women’s race, Sian Rainsley was the highest placed British athlete finishing seventh in 01:05.01.
