Non Stanford wins season opener in Portugal

Published:

Current under-23 World Champion, Non Stanford got her season off to a winning start on Saturday 6 April, crossing the line first at the 2013 Quarteira ITU Triathlon European Cup.

Non went into the event looking to test out her winter training and get some race practice under her belt before travelling to San Diego for her opening ITU World Triathlon Series race of the season.

The welsh athlete won the event with a huge margin over her nearest rivals crossing the line in 02:01.29, over two and a half minutes ahead of her nearest rival Rebecca Robisch of Germany (02:04.02).

Non got her race off to an ideal start recording the second fastest swim of the day before staying in a lead pack of nine athletes on the 40km bike. However, it was the final 10km run which ultimately elevated Non ahead of the competition. After just 2.5km, she had already established a 50-second lead on her chasers, a gap that continued to grow over the remaining 7.5km.

Non commented after the win: “I couldn’t have asked for a better way to open the season. I was especially pleased to have a strong swim and felt comfortable working in the front pack on the bike.

“After a strong opening 5km on the run, it was nice to be able to relax and enjoy the last bit of the race. It was great fun and hopefully I’ve left something in the tank for San Diego!”

Non wasn’t the only British athlete racing in Portugal as fellow UK Sport Lottery funded World-Class athlete, Lois Rosindale finished the day in 11th place with a time of 02:07.57.

The Spanish dominated the elite men’s event and Britain’s highest placed athlete was Rhys Davey in 28th position, recording a time of 01:54.27.
