The North East region took the team title at the 2012 British Triathlon Inter Regional Championships that took place on Sunday 9 September at Hetton Lyons Country Park in Tyne and Wear.
The event was hosted by the North East and Yorkshire and Humberside regions of Triathlon England in conjunction with British Triathlon. saw young triathletes from triathlonscotland, Welsh Triathlon and each of the Triathlon England regions compete not only for individual honours but also for the coveted team title.
The North East region won the title for the second successive year after a strong collective performance from each of the 14 athletes who competed. There were two podium positions for the region to celebrate, with brother and sister Greg and Philippa Chambers winning silver and bronze in the Youth category respectively.
The region also delivered six top-ten additional performances with Ffion Lanigan (10th in female Tri Star 2), Kate Waugh (4th in female Tri Star 3), Fergus Robinson (9th in male Tri Star 3), Bronwen Owen (8th female Youth), Jack Willis (5th male Youth) and Jordan Hull (8th male Youth).
In second place overall was the East Midlands region who improved on their 2011 position of third place to finish in second place. The region secured two bronze place finishes from Connide-May Roper (female Tri Star 2) and Olivia Mathias (female Tri Star 3) along with five additional top-ten performances.
Third place went to Wales, who had one bronze medal finish with Deri Stewart in the male Youth category along with six additional top ten performances.
Each region or Home Nation competed as a team of 14, taking part in six different races over the day from Tri Star 2 through to Youth categories. Athletes scored points for their regions depending on their finishing position. The 12 highest scores are taken from each region and the region with the highest overall score was crowned British Triathlon Inter Regional Champions.
The event also hosted the final event of the 2012 British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series, with an open junior race added to the schedule. Sophie Coldwell won the junior women’s race, whilst Fergus Roberts won the junior men’s event.
