Pallant and Bishop win British Triathlon Super Series titles

Published:

Emma Pallant celebrated winning the British Triathlon Super Series on Sunday as she recorded yet another Super Series podium finish at the Virgin Active London Triathlon, cementing her place at the top of the 2013 standings.

Emma’s third place at the Virgin Active London Triathlon -an event where she started her triathlon career back in 2012 - ensured the former runner has finished on the podium in each Super Series race this season.

Emma went into the finale of the Super Series already in the knowledge that the overall title was hers after securing a second place finish behind Australia’s Charlotte McShane at the British Triathlon Championships Liverpool. Commenting before the Virgin Active London Triathlon, Emma said: “It has been a great debut season for me and I am really happy to win the Super Series title in my first year.”

Second place overall went to Heather Sellers, whose sixth place finish in London was enough to move her up the standings to take second place on the podium. Third place overall went to Jenny Manners. Both Heather and Jenny have never finished outside the top ten in the three of four events in which they competed; a clear sign that consistency rewards athletes in the Super Series.

Victory in London went to Jodie Stimpson who brought her international form in the ITU World Triathlon Series into one of the highlights of the domestic racing colander. Despite trailing behind Lucy Hall in both the swim and bike section of the race, Jodie displayed a characteristically strong run to take the women’s elite title in 1:57.36.  London 2012 Olympian, Lucy Hall followed behind in 1:59.14.

Following her win, Stimpson commented: “Lucy was cycling really well. I tried to close the gap on her but I couldn’t beat her and so I used the run as a chance to catch up and take the lead. It was a fantastic event, you can’t beat racing on home soil – it brings you to another level.”

The men’s elite race was a similarly thrilling spectacle welcoming Greg Rouault to the podium who came in 1:46.23 ahead of British athletes Stuart Hayes and Mark Buckingham. Stuart finished in 1:46.53 while Mark followed with 1:47.08.

Hayes, a former winner of Virgin Active London Triathlon, commented on his commendable second place: “I’m happy with 2nd but I really wanted to win. I’ve done this race fifteen times and I love it.”

Hayes’ took his second silver medal position of the day in the British Triathlon Super Series final standings, losing out on the top spot to Tom Bishop. Tom didn’t race in London, but wins in the LLR Blenheim Triathlon and Toshiba Windsor Triathlon were enough to see him take the title.

After hearing news of his success, Tom commented: “It feels great to be Super Series champion. I love racing in Britain, especially those well-established races that attract fantastic support. I hope that next year, the Series can develop further with the increasing popularity of triathlon in Britain, so that the racing will be even more exciting.”

Scottish athlete, Andrew Christie secured the third spot on the podium thanks to consistent performances through this season’s Super Series.

The Virgin Active London Triathlon will have an hour-long highlights programme broadcast on Channel 4 on 11 August at 7am, repeated on Sky Sports 4 during August.

The Virgin Active London Triathlon isn’t the only triathlon action in the capital this season, as the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final London welcomes the world’s best back to Hyde Pak from 11 to 15 September. The free-to-view event includes elite, paratriathlon and age-group ITU World Championship racing with over 1,000 GB Age-Group athletes in action as they have the unique opportunity to compete for world titles in front of their friends and family.
