British paratriathletes win medals in Madrid

Published:

Great Britain’s paratriathletes ended their seasons on a high in Madrid at the ITU International Paratriathlon. Part of the ITU global paratriathlon series, the event offered ranking points that will help secure race starts at major events next year. More importantly, the Madrid event offered international medal-winning opportunities to a diverse British squad.

World championship medallists, including Lauren Steadman, raced alongside talent athletes making their international debuts on Madrid’s challenging Case de Campo course that has famously hosted televised ITU World Triathlon Series events.

Steadman delivered another exemplary performance to win the PT4 race ahead of teammate Faye McClelland. World championship medallists Jane Egan, Melissa Reid and Sarah Pearson also achieved gold medal winning performances.

Andrew Lewis won gold in the PT2 category having only attended a Talent ID event in March. The single leg amputee won by five minutes over Ricardo Marin of Spain. Derby’s former footballer, Ryan Taylor, won bronze in his international debut.

Lizzie Tench won silver in the PT1 category behind multiple world champion, Jane Egan. Tench was also making her international debut.

Lauren Steadman has been nominated for the IPC’s Young Athlete of the Month, to vote please visit http://www.paralympic.org and vote via the home page. Steadman not only won the world and European titles this year, but also graduated from Portsmouth University with a first class degree in psychology.
