Paratriathlon Training Camp concludes at Prestwold

Published:

British Triathlon’s first paratriathlon training camp of the 2013-2017 UK Sport Lottery funding cycle came to an end last weekend as athletes competed in the British Paraduathlon Championships on Sunday 7 April 2013.

The camp included members of British Triathlon’s recently named performance squad as well as members of the new Triathlon England Paratriathlon Squad funded by Sport England aiming to introduce athletes to the next four years and to create a structured preparation phase for the Championship event on Sunday.

On race day, the paraduathlon wave rounded off an exciting day of racing at Prestwold Airfield that had included youth, junior and senior races with Mark Buckingham retaining his senior title for the third successive year.

Joe Townsend was the first athlete home on race day, completing the course in exactly 58 minutes.

“It’s fantastic, it’s my first race this year with a hard winters training and it has obviously paid off! It has been nice to get back together with the team; we are all good friends on the paratriathlon team. It’s good to get some training in together, do a bit of technical training and take it out to the course at the end of the week," said Joe.

Chris Goodwin (Tri-6) was second across the line, whilst a newcomer to the sport, Phil Hogg finished third overall and second in the Tri-1 category behind Joe.  Phil a member of Triathlon England’s Paratriathlon Squad felt the event was a great end to the weeklong training camp, commenting:

“It was absolutely amazing, just the whole buzz of the whole camp we have been on and to finish it off with the race has just been the pinnacle of the week. This is my first event, straight in at a British Championships, so I got silver and am really happy.”

Clare Cunningham (Tri-4) was the first female finisher completing the course in 01:13.47. Clare was using the race as an opportunity to test out her winter training and get some early race practice in commenting: “I raced solidly on the run, and I was quite pleased with my performance on the bike especially after the run, so it’s all heading in the right direction.”
