Hosted last year in the UK at Challenge Weymouth, the city of Poznan in Poland will welcome Europe’s Long Distance triathletes to the 2016 ETU Championships at Challenge Poznan.
First held in 2015 as a half distance event, Challenge Poznan returns 12 months later over the full iron-distance of 3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run – and will also host the 2016 ETU Challenge Long Distance Triathlon European Championships.
While it will be a long day for everybody, the organisers are promising a fast course for all three disciplines. The swim will comprise of a one loop, out-and-back course within the rowing lake at Maltanskie Lake. The cycle leg comprises of four loops of 45km each on top quality roads with minimal turns and hills to disrupt the riders’ speed. Similarly, the run course is also primarily flat and takes in a road and trail course alongside the Maltanskie Lake. As with the bike, that is a four-lap affair.
Around 50 British Age-Group athletes will be represented in Poland, several of whom are looking to add to podium success achieved last year in Weymouth. Among those, Anthony Webb took Gold last year in the 35-39 division, and he returns this year to try and repeat that is his new 40-44 category.
In the women's field all 3 medallists from 2015 will be lining up in the 35-39 age category. Kylie Mansfield, Anya Starling and Helene Rossiter will look to make a highly competitive race for the age-group podium, hoping to emulate last years success.
The race is scheduled to start at 7am local time on Sunday, with wave starts separated by five minutes.
