Age-Groupers plan ahead for 2017 European Championship qualification

Published:

While the 2016 championships were taking place in Lisbon, this past weekend saw hundreds of athletes seeking selection for the 2017 European Triathlon Championships as the busy Age-Group qualification season continues

The 2017 European Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships will be held in Duesseldorf, Germany next year and the first opportunity for athletes to gain automatic selection took place at the Nottingham Triathlon on Saturday. The National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont provides a traffic free, closed-roads circuit, which always provides fast racing.

The men’s race was dominated by the local team, Tri Camp TFN RT. Matt Nelson, Andy Tarry and Tom Mcglashen were the fastest three men on the day, all from that talented squad of athletes.

Vicky Johnston (Arragons Cumbrian Tri Club) was the dominant female athlete of the day. Exiting the swim 30 seconds in arrears of Amy Pritchard (Tri London), she had moved into the lead by the end of the first of four bike laps and never looked in danger of losing her lead. Lena Poulton produced a strong bike and run to take second place, with swim leader Pritchard racing well to complete the podium.

Sunday’s qualification race was the long-standing Tri UK Shropshire Triathlon held at Ellesemere. The first qualifier for the 2017 Standard Distance European Championships in Kitzbuhel, the event has a distinguished history with past winners including Chrissie Wellington, Sian Brice and Andrew Johns.

Last held in 2014 when the event was won by Luke Pollard, (RAF Triathlon); he returned and dominated the race with a winning margin of over ten minutes. Samantha Rose (Team TORQ) was also a clear winner in the women’s event, finishing over three minutes clear of Candice Heys.

Both the Nottingham and Shropshire events offered four automatic qualification slots for each category to eligible and registered athletes, to their respective 2017 championship race. Full details of athlete qualification status will be available on the links below shortly.
