Silver Success for Gossage at World Championships

Published:

Lucy Gossage won silver as she represented the GE Great Britain Team at the prestigious Zofingen ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championships in Switzerland last weekend.

The 33-year-old cancer research doctor from Cambridge, added silver to the European title she won in Horst earlier this year.

The day was won by Eva Nystrom (SWE) nearly start to finish at the ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championships. However, the Swedish athlete didn’t have it all her own way as Gossage surged ahead on the final lap of the first run to exit T1 in first place.

Nystrom overtook Gossage by the second lap of the bike and blazed through the next 50 kilometres, adding nearly three minutes between herself and her opposition and then built on that lead on the final run. Overall, Gossage maintained her second-place position, while May Kerstens (NED) made a come-from-behind dash to the finish for third.

Nystrom scorched through the finish to collect her first World Championship gold in 07:05.48, while Gossage took silver 4 minutes and 21 seconds later. Kerstens avenged her missed podium last year with a bronze medal time of 07:25.25.

Gossage said: “I’m very pleased to finish second on what is definitely the hardest course I have raced. I was certainly not prepared for the true brutality of the runs! Eva had an incredible race and thoroughly deserved the win. I’m sure I’ll go back one day now that I know what to expect!”

The men’s race was won by Joerie Vansteelant of Belgium. Britain’s Matt Moorhouse was 21st in a time of 7:47.26.

The GE Great Britain Age-Group Team celebrated more medals with Dominic Rohan-Gates (M25-29) and Nikalas Cook (M35-39) winning gold and Steven Howes (M50-54) adding a silver medal.
