Stimpson spearheads British team in Alicante

Published:

Jodie Stimpson starts as the number one ranked female athlete at the Alicante ITU Triathlon World Cup Sunday. Following on from her second place finish in the ITU World Triathlon Series, Stimpson will relish the prospect of enjoying the Spanish race with a little less pressure on her shoulders.

Stimpson rose to the occasion at the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final London earlier this month to secure second place in the Series behind team mate, Non Stanford. Her performance in front of friends, family and huge crowds in Hyde Park marked a career high to win the world championship silver medal.

The women’s field also features Britain’s Katie Hewison, a top twenty finisher in the World Triathlon Series following her best ever season in the sport.

The participation of Natalie Milne and Lucy Hall, two of the fastest swimmers in the sport, will ensure that there is a fast start and high work rate on the hilly, technical bike course.

Mark Buckingham is the top ranked British male athlete. The 28-year-old won the last ITU World Cup event that he took part in, also in Spain. He’s joined by world junior silver and bronze medal winners, Marc Austin and Grant Sheldon.

Phil Wolfe, Liam Lloyd, Cameron Milne and Duncan Macarthur complete the GB line up.

The elite women’s race starts at 9am in Alicante on Sunday morning and is followed by the men’s race at 12pm. Alicante is one hour ahead of the UK.
