Stimpson wins ITU World Cup race in Alicante

Jodie Stimpson won the Alicante ITU Triathlon World Cup in Spain this morning and Britain’s world junior bronze medallist Grant Sheldon stepped up to senior level standard distance racing with a brilliant bronze medal.

Stimpson, second overall in the ITU World Triathlon Series following the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final in London, continued her excellent form with a commanding performance to win the women’s race ahead of Alice Betto (ITA) and Rachel  Klamer (NED).

Stimpson was part of an early break away with some of the world’s fastest triathlon swimmers, including Britain’s Lucy Hall and Natalie Milne. Their hard work on the hilly bike course bike course ensured that Stimpson was in a winning position at the start of the run. Lucy Hall also benefited from being part of the breakaway group by fnishing seventh.

Stimpson said: “It’s brilliant to finish my ITU year with the win and having Lucy (Hall) and Natalie (Milne) there on the bike ensured it was a hard working group. I just ran hard to finish and I’m chuffed with the win.”

In the men’s race 19-year-old Grant Sheldon further demonstrated his talent with a podium finish behind 2004 Olympic medallist Sven Riederer (SUI) and Vincente Hernandez of Spain. Sheldon, the world junior bronze medallist had the fastest 10km run split of the whole field.

Mark Buckingham also finished inside the top ten and all other results are listed below.

In France ITU world champion, Non Stanford, won the French Grand Prix final race in Nice ahead of British teammate, Vicky Holland.
