The build up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games continues this weekend with round six of the ITU World Triathlon Series in Stockholm. Great Britain’s team of six Rio bound athletes will compete along with Commonwealth Champion, Jodie Stimpson, European Champion, India Lee and Adam Bowden.

Olympic Champion, Alistair Brownlee, memorably won the previous round in front of a huge home crowd in Leeds last month. He’s a previous winner in Stockholm from 2013, and finished second to his brother in 2014.

He commented: “I like the Stockholm course, it’s got a bit of everything with some narrow, cobbled streets and the split transition like Leeds. It’s a race I’ve enjoyed and had some success at, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Jonathan Brownlee was second in Leeds and will want to get onto the podium again, especially in the absence of the ITU World Champion, Javier Gomez (ESP) who withdrew from the event earlier this week.

He said: “Since Leeds it’s definitely felt like things are going in the right direction. It will be good to get another tough race done before we start our altitude training block."

Adam Bowden was seventh in Leeds, a result that moved him to seventh in the world rankings and in with a shout of his best ever result in the ITU World Triathlon Series when the Grand Final goes to Mexico in September. Rio bound Gordon Benson completes the men’s line up.

Britain’s women’s line up is remarkably strong with all three Olympic athletes competing along with Stimpson and Lee. ITU world champion, Gwen Jorgensen (USA) is not racing. However, current world number one, Flora Duffy (BER) is racing, as is last year’s winner, Sarah True (USA).

Vicky Holland was third in Leeds and fellow Olympians, Non Stanford and Helen Jenkins have achieved Series wins already this year, as has Stimpson.

Stimpson is currently second in the Series standings and has a realistic shot at the ITU world title if she can maintain the consistency that she’s delivered so far this year.

The women’s race starts just after 4pm local time followed by the men’s race at 6:50pm. The race starts outside the City Hall (Riddarfjärden) and finishes at the Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet).
