Lucy Hall records World Series top ten finish

Published:

Lucy Hall recorded a top ten finish at the World Triathlon Stockholm. She claimed ninth place as Jodie Stimpson struggled in 16th.

Hall had a customary great swim and rode sensibly over the sprint distance course. The narrow, cobbled streets already presented a challenge, but bad weather added to this.

Stimpson, on the other hand, had a bad swim by her standards, and started the bike well down on the lead group. A tangle on the first lap damaged her gear mechanism, making it impossible to change out of the big gear she was in at the time.

On the run, Hall stayed ahead of some accomplished runners to finish inside the top ten for the first time this season.

Stimpson battled to the finish weary after the first two legs and was frustrated with her finishing position, missing the opportunity for another podium finish. She now travels to the World Triathlon Grand Final in third place overall behind USA’s Gwen Jorgensen and today’s winner, Sarah Groff.

British Triathlon Performance Director, Brendan Purcell, summed up today’s races, which started with a win for Jonathan Brownlee ahead of brother, Alistair.

He said: “The conditions for the men’s race earlier today were perfect for Al and Jonny, and they really made the most of them. It was a great race and Jonny clearly wanted to win it.”

He added: “It was a good result for Lucy Hall. Jodie had a tough race, nothing went right for her but she’s on a flight to Canada tomorrow and we’ll make sure that she and everyone else is ready for the Grand Final.”

Women’s results:
1. Sarah Groff, USA, 1:03:00
2. Andrea Hewitt, NZL, 1:03:04
3. Nicky Samuels, NZL, 1:03:05
9. Lucy Hall, GBR, 1:04:08
16. Jodie Stimpson, GBR, 1:04:21
33. Natalie Milne, GBR, 1:05:51
40. Lois Rosindale, GBR, 1:08:35
