Strathclyde set for Sunday’s Penultimate World Paratriathlon Event

Published:

Newly crowned European champions Lauren Steadman and Lizzie Tench feature in the British round of the ITU World Paratriathlon Event Series this Sunday in Strathclyde Park. Having just competed at the ETU European Championships in Lisbon last week, Britain is sending a relatively small team to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games venue.

Steadman has already met the qualification criteria for the Paralympic Games and will race this weekend as part of her preparations for Rio. However, some athletes are still chasing qualification and this is the penultimate opportunity to secure Paralympic ranking points. Dave Hill (PT4) and Phil Hogg (PT1) in particular are looking for good performances in competitive races in Strathclyde.

Recent debutants Kerry Large and Ruth Wilson (both PT4) start their second international events after coming through British Triathlon’s talent ID system. Mark Conway joins Hogg in the PT1 event having won bronze in the previous ITU World Paratriathlon Event in Yokohama, Japan.

Three-time European Champion Jetze Plat (NED, PT1) is amongst the Paratriathlon stars coming to Scotland on their road to Rio. He is amongst those needing the additional points to secure qualification. His teammate Geert Schipper (PT1) is also one of the world’s best and racing in Strathclyde.

The Paratriathlon racing starts at 1:30pm on Sunday 5 June and is free to view to spectators. There is a GB Age-Group Team qualification event also taking place for 2016 Sprint Distance World Championships and 2017 Sprint Euro Championships. This event builds on the legacy of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games delivering international events in Scotland.
