Steadman leads British medals in Strathclyde World Paratriathlon

Published:

World Champion, Lauren Steadman led a British 1-2-3 in the PT4 event at the ITU World Paratriathlon Event in sun-drenched Strathclyde Park. She and Lizzie Tench won gold medals for Great Britain at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games venue.

Steadman has already met the qualification criteria for the Rio Paralympic Games and put on a dominant performance in the PT4 event to finish ahead of teammates Kerry Large and Ruth Wilson, who were racing in only their second ever international events having come through British Triathlon’s talent ID system. In the same classification, Dave Hill finished third in the very competitive men’s event.

Lizzie Tench built on her PT1 European title won last weekend in Lisbon and Phil Hogg won another British bronze in the PT1 class, finishing behind the powerful Dutchmen Jetze Plat and Geert Schipper.

Iain Dawson won silver in the PT5 class for visually impaired athletes, taking Britain’s total to 2 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals.

There is just one ITU World Paratriathlon Event remaining before the Paralympic rankings close at the end of June and national federations are awarded slots for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Currently Great Britain looks to have secured eight slots from a maximum possible of 12, demonstrating the strength of the team during the qualification period.

Not all Paratriathlon classifications will feature in Rio, but it is hoped that additional classes will be added following a successful introduction of the sport on Copacabana Beach this September. Those included in Rio are men’s PT1, PT2 and PT4 and women’s PT2, PT4 and PT5.

Today’s event built on the legacy of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games by delivering international events in Scotland. British Triathlon would like to thank UK Sport and all staff and volunteers involved in delivering a successful home round of the ITU World Paratriathlon Event series.
