Over the past 12 months, interest in the sport has increased dramatically and more women in particular are getting involved and 'giving it a tri’ for themselves. In 2012, over 700 triathlons, duathlons and aquathlons took place in England, seeing over 125,000 people competing, many of them for the first time. Triathlon England aims to enable many more opportunities in 2013 and beyond to enable everyone to achieve their personal triathlon challenge.
Jem Lawson, Chair of Triathlon England, said: “Triathlon is a fast growing sport; by now almost everyone will at least know somebody who has done a triathlon. It’s a great lifestyle sport; participation can help you to get fit, to stay fit but also to compete at a high level. At Triathlon England we have a real desire to get almost everyone to actually do a triathlon. We know that if you do one, you’ll probably want to do another.”
The standard distance of a triathlon, is a 1500m swim, 40km bike and finished off with a 10km run. The swim section can be held in a pool or open-water, the bike on roads or trails (for cross triathlon) and the run on roads or trails. However, there are many shorter and longer distance events, so there is a triathlon event for everyone.
