The GE Great Britain elite triathlon team won two gold and two silver medals at the ITU Duathlon World Championships in Nancy, France. Katie Hewison won silver in the senior race, whilst juniors Richard Horton and Georgia Taylor-Brown won gold with George Schweining adding silver. Iain Dawson also won bronze in the Paraduathlon.
Defending champion, Katie Hewison, won a hard-fought silver behind Australian, Felicity Sheedy-Ryan. The Australian made the best start, and set up a break with Hewison and four-time ITU Duathlon World Championship medallist, Sandra Levenez of France on the bike.
The trio built an insurmountable lead and then battled for the medals during the final 5km run. Sheedy-Ryan sprinted ahead on the first of three laps and surged to gold in 1:52:43. Hewison claimed silver in 1:53:42 and Levenez won bronze in 1:54:20.
Hewison said: “The first run was very, very fast. I’m really pleased with my second place. Last year I think I was a little bit fitter on the run, but I had a stress fracture after the race. This year, I’m healthy, but maybe just a little bit less fit. But, saying that, I’m really pleased.”
In the men’s senior race Tim Don was an early retiree on the first run, but Phil Wylie and Mark Buckingham worked hard, moving steadily up the field as the race progressed.
Wylie achieved his highest ever international result in sixth, just 25seconds away from bronze. Mark Buckingham was 11th.
Georgia Taylor-Brown got the day off to a fantastic start with an early-morning gold medal in the junior event.
It was a tough field in the junior women’s race, with last year’s world champion Joselin Brea and current European champion Sveva Fascetti both competing, however Georgia Taylor-Brown stretched the opening run by taking a 10-second lead into T1.
Richard Horton also matched his European performance with world gold in Nancy. His margin of victory was two seconds over Italy’s ETU Triathlon European Champion, Matthias Steinwandter.
Liam Lloyd finished eighth after his fourth place in the Aveiro ETU Junior Triathlon European Cup last weekend. Calum Johnson finished in a creditable 17 position.
Iain Dawson won bronze in the Tri6 Paraduathlon event for athletes with a visual impairment. The top three athletes finished within 30 seconds of each other, with Raphaël Beaugillet of France winning the gold.
