Bowden aims for top finish in Yokohama

Published:

The fourth round of the ITU World Triathlon Series visits Yokohama, Japan this weekend with Adam Bowden going for his sixth top ten finish. He is one of four British men competing in the elite event. Britain’s women are sitting out this round after winning three out of three of the opening events.

Bowden’s finished 7th in 2011 and has finished inside Yokohama’s top ten every year since, including his highest finish, sixth in 2012. The fast and flat course clearly suits the Loughborough based 33 year-old.

Gordon Benson and Tom Bishop are candidates to support the Brownlee brothers at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and this will be the final race that selectors look at before meeting next week. Performances since last summer will be considered and the team will be announced on 7 June.

Matt Sharp completes the British line up having won his previous race, the Melilla ETU Triathlon European Cup last month. He has never previously raced in Yokohama but has a career highest ITU World Triathlon Series finish of fifth from Auckland in 2013.

The race will feature top ranked Spaniards Mario Mola and Fernando Alarza, who have won the first three rounds of the Series between them. ITU World Champion, Gwen Jorgensen (USA) features in the women’s race.

There are no British women competing, but paratriathletes Chris Frost and Mark Conway will compete in the ITU World Paratriathlon Event on Saturday. Many of Britain’s athletes have opted out of this round in order to prepare themselves for the Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon Leeds on 12 June. This event will be free to view on the streets of Leeds.

The Yokohama elite events are available to view live via the BBC Red Button and online overnight Friday into Saturday morning, and a highlights package features on Sunday. There is also a documentary featuring the Brownlee Brothers on Saturday, details:
